iPhone fell in water - Prevent damage with leapp's tips!

iphone fell in water

It’s everyone’s nightmare: Your iPhone 13 is still in your pocket while you run into the sea, or it slips out of your hands during that romantic water bike ride. Or you’re having a nice drink with friends on a terrace, and suddenly your iPhone ends up in a puddle of water. Or you’re cooking and your iPhone accidentally falls into the sink. What now? We’ll give you some tips on what to do and what not to do when your iPhone has water damage.

Moisture Indicators: First Aid for Water Damage to Your iPhone

The very first thing you should do is turn off your iPhone. Since 2006, Apple has included moisture indicators in every iPhone so that you can easily see if moisture has entered the device. From the iPhone 5 onwards, the indicator is located behind the SIM tray, remove it and when you see a white dot you know that there has been no moisture there. Do you see a red dot? Then read on quickly!

Step-by-step plan: What to do if your iPhone has fallen into water?

Follow these steps to minimize the chance of permanent damage to your iPhone:

  • Get your iPhone out of the water as soon as possible. The longer your iPhone is in the water, the greater the chance of permanent damage.
  • Turn off your iPhone immediately . This reduces the chance of short circuits and further damage to the electronic components.
  • Remove the SIM card and any other accessories, such as cases or screen protectors.
  • Gently pat your iPhone dry with a soft, clean cloth. Avoid using a hair dryer or other heat sources, as these may damage the internal components.
  • Place your iPhone in a container with uncooked rice or silica gel beads. These materials will help absorb any remaining moisture from your iPhone. Leave your iPhone in the rice or silica gel for at least 48 hours.
  • After 48 hours, try turning your iPhone back on. Is your iPhone working properly? Congratulations, you saved your iPhone! If your iPhone is still not working properly, it is wise to seek professional help.

Seek professional help

If your iPhone still doesn't work properly after following the steps, it's a good idea to seek professional help. You can go to an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Repairer for help with water damage. Please note: in most cases, your iPhone's warranty does not cover water damage. This means that you may have to pay for the repair or replacement of your iPhone.

Tips to prevent water damage in the future

Prevention is better than cure. Here are some tips to prevent water damage to your iPhone in the future:

  • Remember that an iPhone is never completely waterproof . Therefore, invest in a waterproof case for your iPhone . There are several waterproof cases on the market that protect your iPhone from water damage.
  • Be extra careful around water. For example, don't leave your iPhone on the edge of a swimming pool or sink.
  • Back up your iPhone regularly. If your iPhone does get water damage, you won't lose all your valuable data and photos.
