Making the most of Siri

You probably know her: Siri, Apple's personal voice assistant. Some use her more often than others, but with the right settings she can help with a lot of things. You can give her commands or ask her what the weather will be like today, for example. But Siri can do much more! We give you five tips to make optimal use of the handy functions of Siri that will make life a lot easier and more fun.

The 'Hey Siri' command

You can activate Siri by long-pressing the home button or the power button on your device. But sometimes you just want to quickly ask Siri something and you don't feel like it, don't have the time or don't have your hands free to long-press that button. Then you can easily enable the function that allows Siri to respond to your voice. You only have to say 'Hey Siri' and you can immediately ask your question. This is very useful when you are driving, for example. You can set this in Settings > Siri & Search under General and enable 'Listen for 'Hey Siri''. Repeat the commands and Siri will respond to your voice.

Have a message read aloud

Another handy tip, especially when you are driving, is to have Siri read your messages to you. Tell Siri to read your latest email or message. She will read it to you and you can even respond to it. Say to Siri: 'Reply to this email.' Siri will ask you what you want in the email and you can now quote it to her while she types it for you. If the email is good, you can tell her to send it. And all that hands-free!

What number is this?

You know how it is: you hear a nice song somewhere, but you don't know what it's called while you would like to listen to it again. With the iPhone app Shazam you could already find out, but now you don't need a separate app for that. Simply ask Siri what song it is and after listening for a while she will tell you. Now you can listen to the song non-stop via your favorite streaming service.

Reminder and timer

Is there something you really can’t forget? Then have Siri remind you by setting a reminder. You can ask her to remind you in half an hour or when you leave a certain place, for example. Do you need to call someone when you leave work? Ask Siri: “Remind me to call back when I leave here.” If your current location changes, you will get a notification to call back. You can also have Siri set a timer, for example, if you really don’t want to burn that delicious meal. Ask Siri to set a timer and she will let you know when the time is up.

The route to...

While maps and city plans have always been a great help, Apple Maps and Google Maps make it all a bit easier. Especially now that Siri can help you with this too. You can now find your route super fast by saying to Siri: 'Navigate to...'. The Maps app will then automatically open with the right route to get you to your destination.

How Siri Can Improve Your Life

Siri is a powerful tool that, if used correctly, can make your life much easier. Here are some ways Siri can help you:

  • Efficiency: Siri can help you get things done faster. You can ask Siri to send a message, make a phone call, set a reminder, get directions, and more—all without touching your phone.
  • Organization: Siri can help you stay organized. You can ask Siri to manage your calendar, set reminders, set timers, and more.
  • Accessibility: Siri can be particularly useful for people with limited mobility or vision problems. Siri can read text, make phone calls and even operate the phone using voice commands.
  • Entertainment: Siri can also act as your personal DJ, movie critic, or game show host. You can ask Siri to play music, recommend movies, and even tell you funny jokes.

Tips and tricks for using Siri

But how can you get the most out of Siri? Here are some tips and tricks you might find useful:
    • Learn basic commands: Siri can understand hundreds of different commands, but it’s important to learn the basics. These include commands like “Call [name],” “Send a message to [name],” “Remind me to do [task] at [time],” and “What’s the weather like today?”
    • Use the right language: Siri understands natural language, which means you can talk to Siri just like you would a person. But it’s important to choose your words carefully. For example, instead of saying, “Set the alarm for 7am,” say, “Set an alarm for 7am.”
    • Set up Siri correctly: To get the most out of Siri, you need to make sure Siri is set up correctly. This means selecting the right language and region, and giving Siri access to the information and apps it needs.
    • Use Siri Shortcuts: Siri Shortcuts lets you create custom voice commands for specific tasks. For example, you can create a shortcut to start your favorite podcast with the command, "Play my podcast."
    • Use Siri with other Apple products: In addition to your iPhone, Siri works on your iPad, Apple Watch , and Mac. You can even use Siri with your Apple TV and HomePod .
    • Respect your privacy: Siri is designed to respect your privacy. Siri won’t send any personal information to Apple without your permission, and you can control what information Siri can use.
